David Umfress

James David Umfress, 73, passed away Saturday, March 2, 2019, at North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo. He was born October 30, 1945 to the late Clay Umfress and the late Thelma Wilson Umfress. He graduated from Itawamba Agricultural High School in 1963 and from Itawamba Junior College in 1965. He also graduated from Mississippi State University in 1967 with a B.S. degree in Industrial Arts and later received his Master's degree from Mississippi State University. He taught industrial arts at I.A.H.S. and I.J.C. from 1967 to 1981. He also taught drafting at Bevill State Community College from 1982 until 2015. While at Bevill State, he was Chairman of the Technical Division for many years and was voted by his colleagues as Outstanding faculty member three times. He was also a finalist for the Chancellor's Award while at Bevill State. During David's illness, he and his family had many calls and visits from former students who all had stories to tell about how he had helped them and influenced them to get an education. David was a member of Itawamba Christian Church where he had been an elder for thirty years. He loved his church and was always thinking about ways to help the church. David loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. He was loved and adored by his family. Services will be at 11:00 am on Tuesday March 5, 2019 at Senter Funeral Home with Ministers' Jim Wismer and Dale Carr officiating. Burial will be in Itawamba Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Monday March 4, 2019 at Senter Funeral Home. Senter Funeral Home has been entrusted with the arrangements. He is survived by his Wife, Mary Lou Umfress, 2 Daughters, Kristina (George) Hogancamp of Caledonia, Kimberley Umfress of Fulton, Son, Jonathan Umfress of Fulton, Grandchildren, Andrew Hogancamp and Bridget Hogancamp both of Caledonia, Sister, Betty O'Quinn of Tupelo, Brother, Daniel (Patti) Umfress of Fulton, sister in law, Linda Umfress of Modesto, CA. He was preceded in death by his parents, a Brother, Harlin Umfress, and a sister in law, Betty Umfress. Pallbearers will be Donnie Bell, Allen Spencer, Jay Morgan, Gray Underwood, Dirk Bennett, Joe Blake, Sonny Nix, Wayne Hughes, Ritchie Stone, Prentiss Howell, Chad Bryant, Mike Reed, Toby Taylor, Brad Whisnant. Honorary pallbearers will be Mike Thomas, Phil Morris, Charles Wren, Steve Summerford, Jim Wismer, Danny Wigginton, Mike Schuchs, and Bobby Jarrell.
